The Plastic Surgery ‘Guide’ For Children:

Okay, “My Beautiful Mommy” has got me flummoxed. For those who haven’t the faintest idea what I’m talking about, it is a book written by a plastic surgeon for kids whose mums have had a plastic surgery, especially a noticeable one like a tummy tuck surgery post-weight loss, breast augmentation, facelift, etc.

Aimed at pre-adolescents aged four to seven, it tells the story of a girl whose mother goes to a cheery plastic surgeon (who looks very Chesty Bonds by the way) for a tummy tuck, breast enhancement and a rhinoplasty.

Keeping in mind the way kids’ minds function at this age, this book can help them understand why mom can’t play catch with them and why she’s so happy even though she has bandages round her tummy. But then I think beyond that and I wonder what good exactly this book will do for the millions of kids who already have role models like Miley Cyrus and Ashley Tisdale.

Emulating teenage singing and acting role models is one thing and looking up to your own mother who has changed her body to look good is another thing. From this latter point of view the book could do more harm than good. The ASPS has taken a commendable stand on this issue by leaving it to the parents to guide their child. So do you think education like this is a good thing for children? Drop in a comment for the Plastic Surgery Institute of California.
